The future is bright – AOFAS, 2019

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Surgery recently held its 50th Anniversary meeting in Chicago and Professor Mackay was delighted to be invited, as an International Member of Faculty, to the pre-meeting.

He had the opportunity to provide some historical background in the approach to ankle ligament instability, talking about how techniques have evolved from non-anatomical reconstruction, which had poor results, to new techniques which reflect a better understanding of anatomy. Other members discussed the latest techniques in augmentation, including InternalBracing and its impact on patient recovery.

Professor Mackay also joined the Arthrex Team for a lunchtime meeting. providing an overview of where the InternalBrace is now – it has over 30 applications in 2019! This light-hearted introduction led to an excellent Faculty presentation on the most recent innovations and applications of some new Arthrex innovations – from fusion plates, fibular fixation to biologics.

Professor Mackay and his wife Jackie rounded off this successful meeting by joining Tom Clanton and his Houston team who have collectively managed to produce 6 American Academy Foot & Ankle Presidents over recent years.  We all wish Bill McGarvey the very best for his forthcoming Presidency.
