Decathlete back competing after ACL Internal Brace surgery

Decathlete back competing after ACL Internal Brace surgery

Dear Prof. Mackay,
I Cc’d you in my email to Mark Pollard at Scottish athletics but wanted to write to you personally myself. It must be hard for you to remember with all the patients you have seen but I came to you as a junior decathlete having ruptured my ACL in my left knee coming off the last hurdle in a race, the week before I attempted qualification for World Junior Championships.
Only 12 months since the operation I competed in my first decathlon back at Men’s U23 British Decathlon Championships where I placed third. The performance itself wasn’t anything special, despite this I hit 3 personal bests, one of them being in hurdles (the event I originally injured my knee in). The fact that the knee could withstand such force and pressure throughout the two days is a triumph in itself and hope I can be a testament to how successful the internal brace procedure is and has been. I have attached some footage from the championship along with images of the knee in action!
Thank you again,
Tom Chandler

An update,
Just updating and thanking. Following an ACL revision in December 14, I  just wanted to inform you that I have just completed a week of skiing (7 hrs per day) with absolutely no issues.
Knee felt great throughout and I am very grateful.

Diver back in the water only nine weeks after Achilles Internal Brace surgery

Diver back in the water only nine weeks after Achilles Internal Brace surgery

After sustaining an injury to my Achilles whilst scuba diving and an inconclusive diagnosis by the NHS as to the extent of the damage, I was recommended by my physio, Niam Mohahmmed, to Prof Gordon Mackay. An MRI scan was arranged and done within days and it was found that I had a 90% tear! Gordon explained in detail his revolutionary “Internal Brace Technique” and how it compared with conventional surgical treatments and recovery times. I had no hesitation in asking Gordon to get me under his care as soon as possible. The operation was scheduled within a few days and carried out with no complications. The aftercare I received was amazing with Gordon coming to see me and explaining again, in detail, how the operation went and he even emailed me photos taken during the procedure, which has made many a great talking point over lunch! I must say the post operative care has been excellent with various follow up visits to monitor my recovery. I was delighted that only 9 weeks to the day after my procedure, I was back in the water scuba diving with no worries or issues. I can’t thank Gordon and all his team enough, both at The Mackay Clinic and Rosshall BMI in Glasgow for the fantastic care I received and would highly recommend them to anyone seeking treatment for any similar injury.
Thank you so much,
Brendan J Carr

Back in action after ankle repaired with Internal Brace

Back in action after ankle repaired with Internal Brace

Professor Mackay has been inspirational to me and I’m extremely grateful for him and his expertise in repairing my injury that has been plaguing me since I was in my mid teens and throughout my military career.
From my little medical knowledge I think the internal brace would be extremely beneficial to the military personnel that have incurred cruciate ligament, ankle ligament injuries etc. I would say this is a medical breakthrough and should be commended at the highest level. In  my humble opinion and limited medical knowledge, the IB is a breakthrough that can literally change people’s lives.
I would certainly be willing to go in-front of any military review board to show the success and faster recovery time that I have experienced. This in turn could keep the soldiers morale high, as they know they wouldn’t be in for weeks upon weeks of physio and could return to normal duties quicker than their colleagues unfortunate enough to be requiring surgery. If you ever approach the military with regards to this surgical procedure (which i think could be a blessing in disguise), then please use myself as an example of how quickly you can recover.
I have been honoured to have been treated by such a skilled surgeon with the attributes of a true gentleman as yourself.
Best regards,
Owen Tullan

Back on the slopes after cruciate ligament surgery

‘Dear Prof Mackay,
Chris and I have just spent a wonderful week skiiing in this area of Italy – you may recall I had a cruciate ligament operation at the end of May 2014. Thanks to your expertise and skill I am back playing tennis and have just skied for 8 days with absolutely no aches or pains’
Many thanks

Scaling the heights

Scaling the heights

Gordon
I’m standing on Mera Peak (6,476m), Hinku Valley, Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal. The highest mountain in the distance is Everest (8,850m) but you also see Nupse (7,855m) on the left and Lhotse (8,516m) on the right. It took 2 weeks walk in from Lukla (one of the most dangerous airport landings in the world!), this required to acclimatise. One week to walk out. High camp was 5,800m and the temperature was -38 until sun rise. We left High Camp at 2am, there were 5 of us roped together, Sherpa in front. This was an experience of a lifetime back in 2007 and it would not have been possible if you had not fixed my knee in 2001.
Thank you and best wishes

Internal Brace surgery is not just for the young!

Internal Brace surgery is not just for the young!

Edward is 82-years-old, after re-injuring a cruciate ligament in his right knee, he underwent Internal Brace reconstruction surgery with Professor Mackay, who also Internally Braced his medial ligament. In this video Professor Mackay catches up with Edward just 8 weeks after his surgery – the results are remarkable and he is already enjoying taking walks again pain free.
It is interesting to note that 8 weeks after conventional surgery the patient would still have been in a brace
