ACL Internal Brace rehab physiotherapy protocol

ACL Internal Brace rehab physiotherapy protocol

Recommended physiotherapy protocol for rehabilitation of ACL injury following Internal Brace surgery. Compiled for the Mackay Clinic by Stewart Kerr, Specialist Musculoskeletal & Sports Physiotherapist, Life Fit Wellness.

From Stewart Kerr re: ACL repair with IB: “The important point to bear in mind is that the original ACL tissue is preserved and repaired with the IB providing a ‘check rein’ support if the ACL is taken into maximal tension, thus protecting the repair. Furthermore, since there is do donor site morbidity, normally the patient have far less post-op pain and swelling therefore quads function is well preserved. This all means that typically patients will be able to progress faster through rehabilitation. Often the main limiting factor is concurrent pathology (i.e. meniscus, OCD, MCL) rather than the ACL itself. I am an advocate of criterion-based rehabilitation rather than timeframe oriented progressions and this is how we have structured this guideline”.
