Professor Mackay has worked extensively with the Scotland rugby team, Premier League football clubs, and Scotland’s Olympians. He was also the official doctor for the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Based at Ross Hall Hospital in Glasgow and Kings Park Hospital in Stirling.

Professor Mackay is also the President and Founder of the Internal Brace International Study Group (IBISG)

Background

With a father who played professional football for Kilmarnock and a mother who was a doctor in Glasgow, Professor Mackay grew up with strong connections to medicine and sport. During his time as an aspiring footballer at Rangers in 1988-89, he experienced the impact of ligament and tendon injuries firsthand - an experience that helped shape his future career in orthopaedic sports surgery.

Sports specialist

Returning to medicine, Professor Mackay chose to specialise in sports surgery, travelling to Australia to learn from specialists treating Australian Rules Football players. He went on to operate on many of Scotland’s leading sportsmen and women and served as a doctor at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup. He now brings this extensive sports surgery experience to a dedicated focus on knee treatment.

Inventor of the InternalBrace

Professor Mackay invented the InternalBrace and developed it with the support of Arthrex, introducing an innovative way to protect ligament repairs and reconstructions during healing. Now used by surgeons worldwide, the technique supports earlier mobilisation and can help patients return to work and sport more quickly. This innovation remains central to his knee practice, with treatment tailored to each patient’s injury and recovery goals.
